Despite its name, osteopathy concerns much more than just bones.
Developed in the early 20th century by Andrew Taylor-Still, osteopathy is a non-invasive therapy involving muscles and joints and related nerves, blood supply and other systems of the body, as well as the skeleton. Many people think of osteopathy as a purely manual (or manipulative) therapy; while this is an important part of it, it's not the full story. Osteopathy is also a holistic treatment that can be used to tackle a wide range of injuries, pain and disorders and can be beneficial to adults, children and babies alike.
If you've lived with pain for a long time, osteopathic treatment can succeed where others approaches have failed, given time and patience. Using a range of techniques, we will work to relieve pain, improve your mobility and help you get on with your life, whether you're suffering from a sport or work-related injury, arthritis, sciatica or other problems.
As well as offering various forms of pain relief at the Clinic, our osteopaths can offer advice on self-help methods for use at home.
The Osteopaths Act 1993 established the General Osteopathic Council to 'provide for the regulation of the profession of osteopathy'. For further details follow www.osteopathy.org.uk.
Chiropractic
Chiropractic focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with special emphasis on the spine
It can relieve many forms of muscle and joint pain and resolve poor movement in the spine to restore function in the nervous system
Therapy includes spinal manipulation and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation, along with exercises and health and lifestyle counselling
Although unusual, this practice offers both osteopathy and chiropractic, as we believe the two can complement each other
At your initial consultation we'll look at your past medical history and carry out a through examination of your neuromuscular skeletal system
We then create an individual package of care built around your needs and lifestyle.
This includes daily stretching exercises to improve mobility, and advice on healthy lifestyle choices
During your treatment your chiropractor will perform skilled, precise manipulation techniques to improve joint mobility, and help to relieve pain and muscle spasm.
