Custom Orthotics &

Leg Biomechanics Analysis

At Haslemere Clinic we provide expert custom orthotics and gait analysis in Haslemere, helping patients with foot, knee, hip and running-related injuries.

Orthotics are prescribed following a detailed biomechanical assessment of the feet, lower limbs and walking or running mechanics.

These prescription devices help correct abnormal loading patterns, improve alignment and reduce strain on joints and soft tissues.

Andrew Wilson-Smith – Registered Osteopath & Biomechanics Specialist in Haslemere.

With over 35 years’ experience prescribing custom orthotics and performing gait analysis. He specialises in lower limb biomechanics, running injuries, knee and hip pain, and mechanically driven foot conditions such as plantar fasciitis.

Orthotics Manufactured by Edser

Labs

Our prescription orthotics are manufactured by Edser Labs, a specialist orthotic laboratory with decades of experience producing high-quality custom orthotic devices for clinicians across the UK and internationally.
Edser Labs combine advanced 3D scanning technology, CAD design and precision manufacturing to produce orthotics tailored to each patient’s biomechanics and clinical needs.
The laboratory works closely with prescribing clinicians to ensure each orthotic device provides the correct support, posting and stabilisation required to improve foot function and reduce mechanical strain through the lower limb.

Custom orthotics are medical devices designed to improve the alignment and function of the feet and lower limbs.

They are prescribed following a biomechanical assessment, which may include gait analysis, clinical examination and 3D scanning of the feet using a medical laser scanner.

The scan and biomechanical findings are used to design a bespoke orthotic device that supports the foot in a more stable and efficient position during walking and running.

The finished orthotic fits comfortably inside your footwear and helps improve lower limb mechanics, reducing strain on the feet, ankles, knees, hips and lower back.

Conditions commonly helped with orthotics and bio-mechanical assesment.

Custom orthotics and biomechanical assessment at Haslemere Clinic can help with a range of lower limb and load-related conditions, including:

  • Knee pain (including patellofemoral pain and load-related knee problems)
  • Hip pain linked to gait dysfunction
  • Running injuries and overuse syndromes
  • IT Band (ITB) syndrome
  • Osgood–Schlatter disease
  • Shin splints (medial tibial stress syndrome)
  • Plantar fasciitis (heel pain / “policeman’s heel”)
  • Flat feet and overpronation
  • Sever’s disease (paediatric heel pain)

These conditions are often influenced by abnormal foot mechanics, gait inefficiencies or uneven load distribution through the lower limb.

A detailed biomechanical assessment helps identify whether orthotic support may reduce strain and improve movement efficiency.

Registered Osteopath | Lower Limb Biomechanics & Orthotics Specialist

Andrew qualified from the British College of Osteopathy & Naturopathy in London in 1989 and remained at the college to lecture in osteopathic technique. He joined Haslemere Clinic in 1990, became a partner in 1996 and was appointed Principal in 2006.

With over 35 years of clinical experience, Andrew has developed particular expertise in lower limb biomechanics, gait analysis and custom orthotic prescription in Haslemere. He completed postgraduate studies in lower limb biomechanics and podiatry, further strengthening his specialist interest in mechanically driven hip, knee and running injuries.

Andrew has been prescribing custom orthotics for more than three decades, working closely with Edser Labs, established manufacturers of bespoke prescription orthotic devices. His clinical approach integrates osteopathy with detailed gait assessment to identify abnormal load distribution and movement inefficiencies that may contribute to persistent pain or recurrent sports injuries.

He has a particular interest in:

    Running injuries

Knee pain linked to foot mechanics

Hip pain associated with gait dysfunction

Plantar fasciitis and lower limb overuse injuries

A keen sportsman himself, Andrew regularly plays tennis, village cricket and golf, giving him practical insight into the physical demands placed on active individuals.
